A native of Moscow, Russia, Ekaterina Makarova is the daughter of Valery and Olga Makarova. Her mother travels with her on tour and her brother, Andrey, is a corporate sales manager. She began playing when she was six years old when a friend introduced her to the sport, and she began playing at Club Luzhniki.
